ASCE-TWIG 2010 Seismic Workshop
ASCE-TWIG 2010 Seismic Workshop
On April 2-3, 2010, the ASCE-TWIG organized a two-day workshop on “Seismic Design and Analysis of Buildings” in Minghsin University of Science and Technology. The workshop features outstanding scholar from the faculty of the Department of civil Engineering of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Dr. J. S. Kuang and researcher at the National Center for Research in Earthquake Engineering (NCREE). Dr. Kuang spent the whole day on Friday April 2, 2010 to address the topics on “The Performance of buildings under the Impact of Seismic Forces” and “Analyzing the Seismic Resistance of Building Structures”. On the second day, the General Manger of the ETABS Software, Dr. Tsai will introduce the Computer modeling skills required to perform seismic analysis. Finally, on the second part of the Saturday, Dr. Chou from the NCREE will demonstrate case study of seismic evaluation using several real-world computer models.
Prof. J.S. Kuang received his PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Cambridge, UK, and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. His research spans seismic analysis and design of structures, seismic vulnerability assessment of buildings, reinforced concrete, and tall building structures. His outstanding research on seismic engineering and earthquake-resistant analysis and design of structures has earned him the T.K. Hsieh Award of ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers, UK) in 2006 and the HKIE Transaction Prize in 2007.
Prof. Kuang is a Chartered Engineer in the UK, and a Fellow of ICE and IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineers). He has been serving as a consultant on structural problems and projects of many types, particularly seismic design of structural concrete and analysis of tall buildings, to numerous governmental and private organizations. He is currently Vice-President of The International Society for Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ISCCBE) and Member of Board of Directors, International Association for Experimental Structural Engineering (IAESE). In 2008, Prof. Kuang joined the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake field investigation team, consisting of the researchers from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, National Taiwan University, National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), Taiwan, University of British Columbia, and Sichuan University. Professor Kuang is a world-class speaker who has working history with many research groups in Taiwan. Soon after the workshop, Dr. Kuang promised to come again in the future.
